Leanne is a young lady with Down’s syndrome and learning disabilities.

She was denied life-changing cataract surgery for years and her deteriorating vision was a huge concern for her family.

However, with the support of SeeAbility’s eye care advisor and hospital eye care professionals, Leanne’s life has been transformed and she is much more independent.

Our film of Leanne’s story gives a rare opportunity to see:

  • How sight problems affect a person with learning disabilities in everyday life
  • What reasonable adjustments can help make surgery possible
  • The improvement in someone’s quality of life following eye surgery

Howard Bunting, the ophthalmologist that supported Leanne at hospital, said:

I am delighted that we were able to make the reasonable adjustments that Leanne needed to have successful surgery.

I would urge all eye care professionals to watch Leanne’s film so that more people with learning disabilities can benefit from the life-changing eye surgery they need.

SeeAbility continues to work to make sure that people with learning disabilities like Leanne can access the life-changing treatment they need.
