Our graphic designer Lee on the importance of being accessible

Lee is our in-house graphic designer. He is responsible for the design and production of marketing materials for both printed and digital media. It’s important we have a graphic designer who cares about accessibility as much as we do. Here Lee tells us about his role at SeeAbility and why accessibility is so important to him.

"At SeeAbility we're lucky enough to be able to share our work with our eye care champions and associates before it goes live. The feedback they give us is invaluable."

How has working at SeeAbility impacted your work?

Working at SeeAbility has had a hugely positive impact on my work. I am more aware of the obstacles people with disabilities face on a daily basis, and how important it is to make sure everything we produce is accessible to all. Working alongside people with disabilities to create accessible work is extremely helpful, insightful, and rewarding.

Why is accessibility important to you?

Everyone should have the opportunity to achieve their goals in life. When something is not accessible it creates a barrier that does not need to be there. Being a champion for accessibility means I can contribute to an inclusive society.

How does accessibility impact your work?

Accessibility is now the starting point for all my design ideas. There is a common misconception that accessible design means boring design: I disagree. There is beauty in simplicity. I don't look at accessibility in design as an obstacle, I see it as a challenge; if we could live in a world full of beautiful, accessible design, that would make me very happy.

What are the most important things about accessible design?

I run through a checklist of fundamentals when working on a project, such as having strong colour contrast and using a large, legible font, but I think the most important thing is to test your work with users. At SeeAbility we're lucky enough to be able to share our work with our eye care champions and associates before it goes live. The feedback they give us is invaluable.

What has been your favourite thing to work on at SeeAbility?

I've been lucky enough to work on lots of exciting and varied projects for SeeAbility. One of my favourite things to work on is our annual Impact Report. Impact reports are a great opportunity to showcase the amazing work SeeAbility does, and the difference it makes to people's lives. It's a fun challenge to make each Impact Report more engaging and accessible than the last, and this year's report is on track to be our most accessible yet!
