Facilities and accommodation

The outside of Heather House, a welcoming red-bricked home with a large gabled entrance, surrounded by a pebbled border and shrubbery.

Heather House is a world-leading specialist nursing care home supporting 16 young adults living with severe, complex neurological, learning and physical disabilities and life limiting conditions. This includes juvenile CLN3 (Batten) disease, Rett syndrome, FOXG1 syndrome, Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and Alternating hemiplegia of childhood (AHC).

The home is comprised of two adjoining bungalows, each providing eight individual bedrooms with en-suite wet rooms and ceiling-track hoist systems to support safe and dignified care.

Both bungalows feature open-plan lounges and kitchens, as well as hydro bath facilities. There are also extensive landscaped gardens, and two on-site guest suites, allowing families to stay close to their loved ones.

Our multi-disciplinary service is led by a highly skilled team of registered learning disability and general nurses, senior support workers and support workers. The team works closely with our in-house physiotherapist, physiotherapy technicians, GPs, neurologists, and a wider network of healthcare professionals, including speech and language therapists and wheelchair services.

Since 1999, Heather House has been at the forefront of efforts to develop our expertise in supporting people with complex health needs, visual impairments, and life-limiting conditions. We want to continue to excel as a specialist provider of quality care and support, ensuring people we support are at the heart of everything we do. Our aim is to support people to make choices for themselves and express their individuality. Personalisation is not a tick box exercise for us. It’s fundamental to how we deliver our care and support every single day of the year.

Something that is very important to us as a family is that our daughter is cared for with dignity, respect and in a caring way (with a sprinkle of unicorn magic). We can see that in abundance with everyone that helps support her in the house, physio and the day centre. Heather House provides our daughter with a safe and friendly environment to thrive and live a happy life. We are grateful she has such a special place to call home.  A parent of someone we support at Heather House

We provide each person with the best care and support throughout their journey with us and specialise in providing people with a professional, compassionate, and dignified end of life care, with support from our local GP.

This includes supporting the family throughout this journey as well and ensuring that they are included in all decisions relating to their child’s care and treatment.

An oasis of exceptional care and calm, full of love and people living their lives to the max. They gave our son his life back, they gave us our parent identity back. We will never be able to thank them enough.  A parent of someone we support at Heather House

Our activity and resource centre

The music room at Heather House, with keyboards and other instruments

We have an activity and resource centre on site which provides a varied range of activities, fun and experiences for all the people that live here.

The team in the centre work hard to enable people to maintain their skills, enjoy new experiences and get the most out of each day. We have theatre groups come in and perform, we have a mobile farm come out every year with a variety of animals, we celebrate events like Valentines, Easter, Halloween and Christmas in the centre with parties and other events throughout the year. We have our own winter wonderland in the garden at Christmas, which is very magical.

Our daughter has been at Heather House for eight years. The wonderful nursing and care team provide her with outstanding care specific to her complex needs that gives us complete peace of mind. The day centre provides her with a very comprehensive range of activities appropriate to her needs and complex disabilities giving her the most amazing quality of life and all under one roof.  A parent of someone we support at Heather House

In-house physiotherapy team

Jordan has a physiotherapy session at Heather House

Heather House has an amazing physiotherapy team who are so passionate and driven in the work that they carry out with all of the people we support. Everyone has an individual programme of physiotherapy based on their needs.

People who live at Heather House can make use of our recently refurbished hydrotherapy pool, gym equipment and the cutting-edge robotic Innowalk Pro. All enable the young people supported to maintain as much of their health and mobility as possible, even as their conditions advance.

We feel that we couldn’t have found a better place for our daughter to live. The care is excellent, the staff so caring and patient. We couldn’t believe our luck when we found Heather House.  A parent of someone we support at Heather House
