Charlotte looking down the road

Meet Charlotte - our new Influencer

I have first hand experience of disability, so raising awareness is a really important to me. I want to make a difference in people’s lives.

Over the nine years I have been supported by SeeAbility, I have felt a huge growth in my confidence. Becoming SeeAbility’s new Influencer is going to be a great challenge.

Step by step

I had previous experience working with children in an SEN Charlotte out shopping(special educational needs) school, which was a really positive experience. My hard work was really appreciated and my disabilities never seemed to be an issue. If only all employers could be the same!

When we made the decision for me to move into my own flat three years ago, I was very anxious. It took me some time to get my head around the idea of living independently, but the fact I’ve had amazing support around me and had come so far already helped a lot.

One person that I’d like to mention is my support worker, Mel. She has been fundamental to my achievements in the last few years – I have my very own cheerleader! I’m so grateful for her support and encouragement over the four years we have known each other.

Reflecting back now, it was absolutely right for me to move out and I want to continue trying new things the future.

Flying out of my comfort zone

When my support team told me about the Influencer role, I knew it could be a great way of advocating for myself and others, while continuing to step out of my comfort zone – so, I applied! I just need to keep believing in myself.

When I found out I had been successful, I was really happy. It is a great next step.

I am particularly looking forward to working with my manager, Scott Watkin BEM, and new colleagues to campaign and pull focus towards really important conversations like mental health and wellbeing, SeeAbility’s special school eye care service and all the different programmes we run.

Part of the team

Charlotte presents Scott with an awardOn my first day, I travelled to an Innovation and Social Impact Team away day at Redhill with Mel. I felt really brave sitting in a meeting room with lots of people I hadn’t met yet from the team, as we talked about the work they have been doing and what I can get involved in.

I even presented Scott with a trophy after he was voted to have the done the best in a team building activity! I really enjoyed the day.

"I can’t wait to work closely with my colleagues and gain more experience over the next year. I know I have a lot to give and I am really glad that I have a job where my voice can be amplified and my lived experience is valued."
