SeeAbility needs local votes to bag a share of Tesco’s community fund Good eyesight enables people to learn, communicate and feel more confident. However, not enough people know that adults and children with learning disabilities are far more likely to have a serious problem with their eyes and are often missing out on vital eye care. We are working hard to change this. With help from local Tesco shoppers, we want to help people in Manchester get the eye care they urgently need. Tesco has teamed up with Groundwork to deliver a special voting round of its community funding scheme, which will see grants of £25,000, £15,000 and £10,000 awarded to community projects from the Tesco Bags of Help Centenary Grant initiative. Three groups in each Tesco region have been shortlisted to receive the cash award and shoppers are now being invited to vote for who they think should take away the top grant. With the support of Manchester shoppers, we are hoping to bag a massive cash boost to help fund our ‘Every Day in Focus’ initiative. This project is led by people with learning disabilities who go into schools, workplaces and community groups sharing information about eye care and encouraging others to get the support they need. Scott Watkin BEM, our Head of Engagement, said: I have an eye condition that was thankfully picked up early on and treated. If it hadn’t been treated, I would be a lot less independent now. Access to eye care for people with learning disabilities is a complete lottery and I was one of the lucky ones. I want to make sure that people with learning disabilities get good eye care and vision so that they can play a full part in our communities. Voting is open in all Tesco stores in the Manchester area from 1st October and runs until 31st December. Customers can cast their vote for SeeAbility using a token given to them at the checkout in store each time they shop.
