Help provide specialist support A photo of Michael washing up

We provide person centred services to enable people to live life to their own individual potential.

I’d like to introduce you to Michael. Michael is 56 years old and currently lives in a residential home in Surrey, but aspires to live independently. To do that he needs to develop his daily living skills which include being able to prepare and cook nutritious meals safely without help.

Michael has a visual and hearing impairment and a learning disability. He understands what he needs to do but finds it difficult to remember the right sequence to ensure that his meal includes all the right ingredients and that it is cooked properly.

Through continuous specialist rehabilitation support provided by SeeAbility, he is now able to make a range of delicious meals. This personalised one-to-one support involved Michael and his support worker creating a photographic recipe ‘book’.

Each photo represents the exact task Michael has to do in the right sequence. Everything from washing his hands, gathering the ingredients, choosing a coloured chopping board so he can see the colour contrast to make it safe for him to chop ingredients safely, to setting the oven timer to ring when the cooking is finished. He is very keen to learn new healthy recipes and chicken casserole is his new favourite dish!

Each recipe can take Michael many months to ‘master’ and takes patience.

SeeAbility’s philosophy is that everyone has the ability to learn new skills – however long that may take.

£20 could produce a full colour photographic recipe collection for Michael and others who aspire to cook independently.
