We can also work with your company to help you organise your own events. Why not consider one of the following or invite us to help you organise a bespoke fundraising activity?
UnumProvident & Ivan's Dream
SeeAbility resident, 66 year old Ivan Storey, finally fulfilled his lifetime's ambition when he completed the 1,000 mile Le J'oG, John O'Groats to Land's End Challenge on a tandem bike. He was supported by a team of over 120 cyclists and runners from leading disability insurer, UnumProvident whose staff also completed the gruelling relay challenge by tandem and by running ten mile stages.
UnumProvident chose SeeAbility as their charity for 2006 and organised the Le J'oG event. Staff across the company have been fundraising for SeeAbility's eye 2 eye Campaign by undertaking all sorts of imaginative activities including car washes, dress down days and balloon races. The eye 2 eye Campaign aims to ensure people with a learning disability are able to access the support they need for regular sight tests and provides specialist services for those who have a visual impairment.
David Scott-Ralphs, SeeAbility's Chief Executive sent heartfelt congratulations and thanks to all the UnumProvident staff who helped to make the event possible with the message, "Well done Unum - and thank you - for leading the way for people with disabilities - right across the UK!"
Ivan Storey, who after 2 weeks of tandem cycling, is enjoying a much needed rest at home in Leatherhead said, "I enjoyed every minute of it and would happily do it all again in reverse! Thank you to everyone who made it happen and to all my pilots who got 10 out of 10!"
It is hoped that UnumProvident's Le J'oG event will raise in the region of £30,000 for SeeAbility's eye 2 eye Campaign.
Innovative use of volunteering
When Sony’s senior management team wanted to set up a team building day they worked with SeeAbility to make innovative use of volunteering to fulfil their objectives.
Having already provided volunteers for SeeAbility’s residential centre in Tadley, Sony worked with us to come up with a gardening project that would involve staff from one department working in small teams to achieve a common goal. A meeting took place prior to the day itself to outline the parameters of the day, the nature of the project - garden clearance to make way for a path to connect two buildings - and the requirements of staff.
On the day itself, the staff were divided into different teams and were briefed on their objectives by one of SeeAbility’s volunteering coordinators. Commenting on what the day achieve, Derry Newman VP Eurpoean Operations said “SeeAbility worked closely with us to ensure they understood what was required of the day and then did the right amount of planning and preparation to ensure that the day was a resounding success. The day more than met the objectives and, as a team building exercise I found the use of volunteering with this small but progressive charity to be a resounding success.”
Have you got Specs Appeal?
SeeAbility invites your company to support our vision by holding a fundraising event on World Sight Day (October annually). Last year, our staff designed fun 'specs' to reflect their personality. See what your staff could design for a dress-down day with a difference!
Team challenges
UnumProvident, the UK's leading disability insurer saw life from a visually impaired person's point of view when they took part in a team challenge. Unum's directors were led through visual impairment training and then accompanied a number of people who are blind or partially sighted with other disabilities on a series of visits to local attractions.
