Valuing Our Vision: Just 1 week left to take parta photo of a lady with glasses

Do you want to know more about how to support adults with learning disabilities to make the most of their sight? If so, you have until 18th February to book your ticket for Valuing Our Vision, a conference for anyone working with people who have learning disabilities.

Scott Watkin who has a learning disability and is the co national director for learning disabilities from the Department of Health will the chairing the day and, together with Lead for Complex needs Sue Carmichael, will be talking about the health inequalities people with a learning disability face. Scott says, “I am very excited about coming to Leeds to make sure eye care and vision is on everyone's agenda when trying to improve the health and lives of people with a learning disability.”

Laura Christie of SeeAbility, says, “So far we have had bookings from optometrists, orthoptists, ophthalmic nurses, rehab workers, learning disability nurses, managers and support staff of support services for people with learning disabilities. This is a unique event bringing together some amazing experts who are ready to share their knowledge and inspire you.”

Optometrist Gordon Illett will be talking about the prevalence of eye problems and all about eye tests for people with a learning disability and Maggie Woodhouse will focus on people with Down’s syndrome. Professionals in orthoptics and ophthalmology will take you through the rest of the eye care journey.

Mary Bairstow and Anita Lightstone will give an overview of the work of Vision 2020 and UK Vision strategy. The remainder of the day will focus on rehabilitation, independent living plus workshops on consent and health facilitation for people who have sight loss.


David Scott Ralphs, Chief Executive of SeeAbility, will close the conference.
