Get LISTED for Learning Disability Today 2010

SeeAbility is working with the Eye Health Alliance, a coalition of the optical bodies and eye care charities to produce the Eye Zone, an innovative area at Learning Disability Today 2010 where people with learning disabilities and their supporters can learn about eye care.

Get Involved

If you are able to offer eye examinations for people with learning disabilities, join the Look Up Optometrists database ahead of the exhibition. It lists optical practices and their facilities for people with learning disabilities across the UK to enable people and their carers to find the practice that best meets their needs. Everyone who visits the Eye Zone will find out about the Look Up Optometrists database and learn that it is a great place to find an optometrist.

Attend on the day

Learning Disability Today 2010 is the only exhibition on learning disabilities in the UK and it brings together people who have learning disabilities, families and carers and those working within the private, statutory and voluntary sectors. If you want to understand more about learning disability, visit the conference, take part in the seminar programme, and view some of the 100 exhibitors and interactive zones.

About the Eye Zone
The Eye Zone will be a fun, lively and informative zone for people who have learning disabilities and their supporters. The zone is designed to:

  • educate about the prevalence of sight problems amongst those who have learning disabilities
  • stress the importance of, and encourage, regular and effective sight tests for people with learning disabilities
  • help people with learning disabilities to become familiar with the role of the optometrist/optician, eye testing methods and equipment
  • motivate and support people with learning disabilities to wear, look after and repair their glasses

Plus, everyone attending will be able to learn more about SeeAbility’s eye 2 eye Campaign and the Look Up website, a source of information on eye care and vision for people who have a learning disability.

More about the Eye Zone

SeeAbility’s eye 2 eye team will be discussing the importance of eye care with individuals. Eye health information resources will be on offer including easy read material for people with learning disabilities. Optometrists will introduce people to a range of optometry equipment such as a tonometer, slit lamp and ophthalmoscope and explain what each does. An optometrist will be on hand to take photos with a fundus camera for visitors to take home. Attendees can try on a range of fashionable frames and talk to a dispensing optician who is available to fix and clean frames and give some basic guidance and support around wearing glasses, a major problem for people with learning disabilities.

There will also be information from SeeAbility’s eye 2 eye Campaign and Look Up, a website packed with information on eye care for people with a learning disability. www.lookupinfo.org
