Awards for Volunteers in SurreyThirteen local volunteers were recognised by SeeAbility at an awards event held on World Sight Day (Thursday October 9th.) All the recipients volunteer at SeeAbility's Leatherhead centre for people with a visual impairment and additional disabilities. The ceremony was held at the Leatherhead Institute. Tim Partridge, National Volunteer Manager, presented awards to SeeAbility volunteers, Pamela Braham, Cathy Sachinis, Linda Twine, Wendy Constable, Graham Leather, Mike Price, Martin Beasley, Janet Morris, Joe Parkinson and David Parker all received awards for 5 years volunteering. Maurice Hutton, Moira Sawbridge and Allen Belworthy received awards for 3 years volunteering. Volunteers can help in a wide range of activities - everything from DIY and gardening to cookery, arts and crafts or taking residents out for a walk through the town and spending time to have a chat over a cup of tea. Tim Partridge, SeeAbility's National Volunteer Manager, comments, "Volunteers play a vital role at SeeAbility. We aim to provide a person-centred approach to care which enables people to maximise their independence. Volunteers help our residents integrate into the local community as well as confidence building. We are extremely grateful to them all." Tim Partridge joined the award winners and some of the people who live at SeeAbility's services at Leatherhead together with some of those who use the Millennium Activity Centre for lifelong learning opportunities. SeeAbility, formerly The Royal School for the Blind, provide a wide range of individually-tailored residential and day services for people with a visual impairment and additional disabilities which enable each individual to maximise their independence.
