Students take a break from academia

On Wednesday February 6th, two students from Surrey University arrived at Denecroft in Guildford to take part in National Student Volunteering Week.

The aim was to give the garden a quick once over before spring arrives. The students were set the challenge of weeding and sweeping the paths and patio before adding a splash of colour with some new pot plants.Student Volunteers at Guildford

After a welcome and introduction from centre manager, Sara Lock, the students enjoyed an al fresco lunch in the garden.

Then it was down to business and supported by the Volunteers Manager, Tim Partridge, the students began weeding and tidying.  After two solid hours it was time for a rest and a quick cuppa before getting on with planting up some large pots. These were filled with pelargonium's and delicate 'tete a tete' daffodils, before being set out in front of the conservatory.

The impact was immediate and everyone at Denecroft was very happy with the results. This is the first time we have engaged student help and we hope to develop links with more universities and colleges next year.

Sara Lock commented, ''It is great to see young people showing commitment to their local
community. The garden looks fabulous''.
