Twenty thousand miles by tandem

The SeeAbility Tandem Club which provides cycling opportunities for blind people celebrated its tenth birthday on Friday 30 November. Ten tandems, six solo cyclesLeatherhead Tandem Club and two support vehicles set off on a 12 mile trip to Fanny's Farm near Chipstead for lunch, before returning to Leatherhead for a get together and celebration party.

The Club entirely run by volunteers takes up to 25 residents from SeeAbility in Leatherhead on weekly rides into the local countryside. In the last ten years, they have competed over 200 rides, clocking up an incredible 20,000 miles, the furthest distance being 60 miles in one day!!

One of the SeeAbility residents who has benefitted from the Tandem Club is Anne Grindrod. Anne has been cycling with the club for most of its ten year history. She commented:

"I enjoy going on the Tandem Change over big outings because I can do more cycling on the side-by-side tandem. I also enjoy the tea-runs we have from spring until the end of summer.

Dave Chartres the leader of the club and one of the founding volunteers commented:

"The club has grown beyond all our expectations. Tandem riding is an excellent way for people with a visual impairment to explore the countryside and get some exercise into the bargain. It's been a great decade"
