Dollond & Aitchison Award CET Points for SeeAbility Training

Dollond & Aitchison is working closely with its chosen charity SeeAbility, formerly known as The Royal School for the Blind, to improve sight tests for people with a learning disability.

SeeAbility's eye 2 eye Training Programme, which has been launched in both Sheffield and Birmingham, is designed to help optometrists give more appropriate sight tests to people with a learning disability who may have communication difficulties and may be unable to use the Stellen chart.  D&A The Opticians are awarding all their optometrists who take the course two CET points.

People with a learning disability are three times more likely to have a significant visual impairment than the rest of the population but they are less likely to have their sight tested and in some cases people lose their sight needlessly.

"D&A cares passionately about eye health and is committed to providing first class sight tests to everyone," explains Andy Cole, Head of Learning and Development for D&A.  "SeeAbility's eye 2 eye Training Programme has enabled our optometrists to gain a much greater understanding of the issues facing people with a learning disability.  Everyone who has attended the training programme has found it helped them to give far more effective sight tests to people with a learning disability."

SeeAbility currently operates training in designated areas with plans to roll this out for wider coverage.  The eye 2 eye Campaign  is helping people with a learning disability access appropriate eye healthcare - including sight tests and low vision support.
