Royal Visit For SeeAbility's Windmill Court

HRH The Duchess of Gloucester, Patron of SeeAbility, was in Honiton on the 26th September to officially open Windmill Court.

Windmill Court is an award-winning development of seven self-contained flats for young people with a visual impairment and additional disabilities which allows them to have the support they need whilst developing daily living skills.  Windmill Court epitomises SeeAbility's ethos of seeing beyond disability by giving people with complex disabilities the opportunity to gain greater independence, integrate into the local community and access a wide range of learning, social and leisure opportunities.

Vice Lord-Lieutenant presented High Sheriff of Devon, Mr Anthony Mildmay-White and Mrs Anne Mildmay-White, Chairman of East Devon District Council, Cllr. Paul Diviani, Mayor of Honiton, Cllr Vernon Whitlock and Mayoress, Mrs Sheila Whitlock and Vice-Chairman, SeeAbility trustees, Mrs Elizabeth Wagstaff.

The Duchess saw how the unique design and state-of-the-art facilities are of such tremendous benefit to the people who live there.  The Duchess met several of the tenants and their families and was able to hear first hand how Windmill Court has changed their lives.

"We are delighted that the HRH The Duchess of Gloucester was able to officially open Windmill Court today," said Andrew Down, Deputy Manager of Windmill Court.  "It is one of the leading services of its kind, giving people with multiple disabilities the opportunity to maximise their independence and lead fulfilling lives.  Windmill Court's person-centred approach has created a standard of excellence which we hope will become a blueprint for future care."

The Duchess unveiled a commemorative brick to mark the official opening of Windmill Court.

SeeAbility is extremely grateful to all the members of the local community who raised money for this ground-breaking project.
