SeeAbility provide D&A with expertise in giving sight tests to individuals with a learning disability

D&ASheffield branches of Dollond & Aitchison are improving sight tests for people with a learning disability.  Specially trained Optical Advisors have been appointed in all four Sheffield branches following training given by SeeAbility to assist in the effective preparation for patients with a learning disability in order to make their actual eye exam most successful.  These branches of D&A have also introduced longer appointments to facilitate these tests,  purchased specialist equipment and optometrists are receiving training in Makaton signing, to enable staff to communicate with individuals with speech difficulties.

D&A are working closely with SeeAbility, their chosen charity, who specialise in providing services to people with a visual impairment and additional disabilities.   SeeAbility, formerly The Royal School for the Blind, whose eye 2 eye Campaign enables people with a learning disability to access appropriate sight tests and eye healthcare, are delighted by D&A's initiative. D&A are planning to extend this training into other areas around the country.

"People with a learning disability are more likely to have a significant visual impairment," explains Paula Spinks-Chamberlain, SeeAbility Director of Information and Advisory Services, "but they are less likely to have eye tests and often cannot communicate that they have a sight problem and if left unchecked can lead to irreversible sight problems and many people leading isolated lives.  We are delighted by D&A's  support and commitment to improving sight tests for people with a learning disability and we hope other high street opticians follow their lead."
