Unilever volunteers help the garden grow at Woodlands.

Unilever at Woodlands

On 24th May 2007 a team of 6 volunteers from Unilever in Crawley arrived to take on a garden challenge with a difference. Their task was to realign some of the pathways that lead into the sensory garden to make them even more accessible for residents.

The paths were first deconstructed and then rebuilt with turf laid alongside to provide a contrast to facilitate navigation. Several large flower pots were planted up and placed at the edges of the new route to aid navigation and give interest. New lavender plants were put in to provide fragrance along the new path.

A large wooden arch that had previously been purchased and assembled was put in place above the gate leading out of the garden. This will be planted up with fragrant climbing plants such as honeysuckle and will act as a navigation point.

At lunchtime the team from Unilever team sat and shared a picnic with Woodlands residents Paul and Eric. This was particularly enjoyable for the Unilever team as they were able to meet some of the people who their work will directly benefit.

Once the work was done Woodlands resident, Sam, with help from Richard Fairbank  presented a certificate of thanks to the team.

Already three of Woodlands residents have been to investigate the new path and newly planted flowers. One resident, Michael had never ventured that far into the garden but yesterday was exploring the new area with relish.
