Taking the message about eye care and vision across the UK!
Look Up is a national information service focusing on eye care and vision for people with learning disabilities. It is a collaboration between SeeAbility and the RNIB and launched in Learning Disability Week 17th - 24th June 2007.
The service, for adults with learning disabilities; family carers; eye care professionals and health and social care staff; will be delivered via a website www.lookupinfo.org, publications, a telephone line and an email forum.
Look Up operates across the UK to:
-
Raise awareness of the prevalence of sight problems and the high level of under detection of these problems amongst people who have learning disabilities.
-
Improve and increase access to regular, accessible and effective eye care for adults with learning disabilities.
-
Enhance the quality of life for people with learning disabilities when a sight problem has been identified.
-
Help social care and health professionals to develop better services for people with learning disabilities - while working at all times to improve our own.
Facts about Look Up
-
The name Look Up was created by someone with a learning disability who attended one of our London consultation events
-
Look Up is a collaboration between SeeAbility and the RNIB and builds upon the work previously undertaken by the RNIB Multiple Disability Team
-
People with learning disabilities and their supporters wanted an easy to use national register of optometrists. www.lookupinfo.org has a searchable register which gives key information about optometry practices and the facilities they have available for people with learning disabilities
-
The website will be a "one stop shop" of information on eye care and vision for people with learning disabilities - it will be educational, easy to use and full of accessible, up to date, and free to download information
-
People with learning disabilities are taking part in producing a series of educational photographic montages to illustrate eye conditions, what this mean to people with learning disabilities, and how supporters can help people see better
If you are an Optometry practice that wishes to be part of our national register then go to www.lookupinfo.org to register your details on our database.
